Mr. Torrance Torrance, C.Eng., F.I.MechE. serves as the moderator of the
Aero-Derivative Specifics forum. Mr Torrance is a versatile
Consulting Engineer with extensive experience in engineering and project disciplines in the Process and Power Generation industries having managed both large organisations and major projects. Mr. Torrance, also fluent in the French language, has operated at the highest levels in blue chip organisations where he has constantly initiated, driven and implemented change while seen as excellent communicator and team leader. Mr. Torrance was educated in Scotland, obtaining his B.Sc. with honors in Mechanical Engineering at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, and is both a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of Institution of Mechanical Engineers in the UK. In 1991 the London Chamber of Commerce awarded Mr. Torrance First Prize (world-wide) in Foreign Languages for Industry and Commerce for French language skills and later in 1996 Torrance graduated from the Alstom Senior Management Development Program in Fontainebleau, France.
Early in his career at GEC ALSTHOM, Mr. Torrance restructured the 320-strong engineering function to reduce design cycle time by 50 percent and increase design productivity by 30 percent. He went on to manage the design development of several first generation UK CCGT Power Stations including Connah’s Quay, Little Barford and Barking as well as Black Point in Hong Kong and a new family of 600/800 MWe class coal fired Power Stations for developing markets in Far East.
Later at Foster Wheeler, Mr. Torrance was able increase business volume by 200 percent and improve profitability of a partnership-type contract with BP by a factor of three during his 20-month tenure. Back with Alstom, he negotiated flagship turnkey power project contracts in the Far East and India; conceived and implemented a major PDM application which yielded an immediate 90 percent reduction in site queries and material shortages. When he joined Rolls-Royce Power Ventures, Mr. Torrance brought structure and discipline to engineering and construction activities by devising and implementing novel ISO 9000 compliant quality systems and procedure and successfully completed a number of small power generation projects in the UK and abroad using RR and other equipment while negotiating and managing disposal of surplus gas turbine assets. Finally, in Private Consultancy, Mr. Torrance has worked internationally across a wide range of power and process technologies in a variety of senior roles for leading international clients and projects; and also provided Expert Witness services in construction and technical disputes.
