Kalman N. Lehoczky, Hydrogenerator consultantRichard Huber, PE serves as the moderator of the Hydrogenerators forum. Mr. Huber has worked on large hydrogenerators and large motors and related equipment for over 40 years. Much of his career was spent with B. C. Hydro in Vancouver Canada where he worked in a maintenance group in charge of the maintenance of 80 hydrogenerators ranging in size from 3 MVA to 500 MVA. The bulk of the work included the inspection, testing and repair of generators under routine and emergency circumstances, developing specifications for new equipment and carrying out factory inspections.

During his 40 year career, Mr. Huber also spent 10 years at Powertech Labs Inc. (a B.C. Hydro subsidiary) where he routinely tested generator stator bars/coils and performed root cause analysis of failures in generation and distribution equipment. He also worked 10 years in an electrical service shop directing repairs on motors, generators and medium voltage switchgear. Since retiring from B.C. Hydro

in 2008, he estabished Richard Huber Engineering Ltd., an independent consulting firm that assists clients with hydrogenerator inspections and condition assessment, failure analysis, factory inspections and the preparation of technical specifications for purchasing generators. Mr Huber has also provided technical advice to clients regarding the suitability of insulation systems for new machines.

Mr. Huber has authored or co-authored many articles published through a wide range of technical organizations; CEA, Cigre, EASA, Hydrovision, IEEE. These articles covered such topices as PD testing of generators, failure analysis and repair of generators, transformer testing and repair, motor testing and repair, and the early development of instrumentation for brushgear performance assesment. He is a senior member of the IEEE and an active member of several IEEE standards working groups. Mr. Huber has been a member of EASA’s (Electrical Apparatus Service Association) Technical Services Committee for over 25 years. He is a registered professional engineer in British Columbia Canada.
